Travellers Odyssey

I worked on Traveller’s Odyssey as a camera operator and sound recordist for a live travel show filmed in Hastings and St Leonards, capturing the character, culture, and atmosphere of the towns while working directly with members of the public to create engaging, real-time storytelling for viewers.
The programme focused on highlighting local attractions, independent businesses, cultural landmarks, and seaside traditions, presenting an authentic and immersive look at life in Hastings and St Leonards. Filming took place in active public spaces, requiring adaptability, strong communication, and the ability to respond naturally to unscripted interactions.
On this project, I worked as both camera operator and sound recordist, responsible for capturing high-quality visual footage while ensuring clear and reliable audio in busy public environments. I managed shot composition, exposure adjustments, and camera movement in real time, while also overseeing microphone placement and audio monitoring during interviews and live interactions. Recording inside museums, on bustling streets, and along the seafront required constant technical awareness to maintain professional production standards across both video and sound.
Production involved filming at a variety of key locations across the towns, including a tea museum on George Street where we captured detailed interior footage and atmosphere shots, as well as conducting an on-location interview with the manager of the Fisherman’s Museum to explore local maritime history. We also filmed along the seafront, including a dedicated eating segment at a traditional fish and chips shop, capturing both the dining experience and the surrounding coastal environment to emphasise the authentic seaside culture. Each location required quick setup, efficient coverage, and careful framing to balance environmental storytelling with presenter-led content.
For Traveller’s Odyssey, we worked with a professional multi-camera setup designed to maintain high production quality while adapting to the fast-paced nature of filming in live public environments across Hastings and St Leonards. We used three Sony A7III cameras to capture a variety of angles simultaneously, allowing us to film wide establishing shots of locations, mid shots of presenters, and close-up details for interviews and cutaway footage, which gave the programme a dynamic and polished visual style. This multi-camera approach also ensured we had strong coverage during unscripted moments with members of the public, enabling smooth transitions and continuity during editing. To achieve clear and professional audio throughout the production, we used two sets of Rode Video microphones, with one set dedicated to the presenters to ensure consistent sound quality as they moved between locations and another set used specifically for guests and interviewees, allowing us to capture dialogue clearly even in busy outdoor environments. Because we were filming in public areas such as George Street and the seafront, monitoring audio was essential, so we used professional headphones at all times to check sound levels and prevent issues such as wind interference, background noise, or distortion. We mounted our cameras on Manfrotto tripods whenever possible to maintain stable framing and achieve a clean, cinematic look, particularly during interviews and presenter-led segments. Our filming took place at several key locations, including a tea museum on George Street where we captured detailed interior shots and atmospheric footage, an interview with the manager of the Fishermen’s Museum where we explored Hastings’ maritime heritage, and a traditional fish and chips shop on the seafront where we filmed an engaging eating segment that combined presenter interaction, food coverage, and natural coastal ambience. Filming in these varied and active locations required strong technical awareness, teamwork, and adaptability to maintain both visual and audio quality while delivering an authentic and engaging travel experience for viewers.
This project strengthened my ability to work confidently in live, fast-paced environments where adaptability and technical precision are essential. Managing both camera and sound in varied settings, from indoor heritage locations to busy seafront businesses, reinforced the importance of preparation, communication, and quick decision-making when delivering engaging real-time content.
Behind the scenes, filming required careful coordination when moving between indoor museum environments and outdoor coastal locations, with constant adjustments to lighting conditions, background noise, and public foot traffic. Working in active spaces meant maintaining professionalism while remaining flexible, ensuring that every segment, interview, and featured location was captured smoothly and effectively.
