A New Dawn at the Angels is a documentary-style video series that follows the newly appointed manager of Tonbridge Angels Football Club, Alan Dunne, as he navigates his first 60 days in charge. The series provides fans and followers with an inside look at a new era for the club, capturing both significant moments on and off the pitch as well as the evolution of the team’s culture and vision. As part of a small creative production team, I contributed to several key aspects of the series from filming and editing to narrative development and creative execution.
A New Dawn at the Angels is a documentary-style series following the early tenure of a new manager at Tonbridge Angels Football Club, capturing the first phase of leadership transition both on and off the pitch. The series was designed to provide supporters with exclusive insight into the club’s evolving identity, combining sit-down interviews, training ground access, matchday coverage, and archival material to create a cohesive narrative around change, ambition, and progression. The creative intention behind the series was not simply to document results, but to humanise the process of leadership in football. This required balancing emotionally driven storytelling with factual match coverage and structured interview content. Each episode needed to feel authentic, immersive, and reflective of the club’s culture, while still maintaining clarity and pace suitable for a digital audience. A key component of the project was ensuring visual and tonal consistency across multiple episodes, despite varying filming conditions, archive formats, and matchday environments. The integration of historical footage with newly captured interviews required careful editorial judgement to maintain narrative flow while preserving the authenticity of real events. The project operated within a structured production framework, where briefs were defined by producers and adjustments were implemented through timecoded feedback. This created a professional production environment where collaboration, responsiveness, and technical precision were essential.
On this project, I was responsible for selecting and preparing the required equipment for each shoot, ensuring that all cameras, audio systems, and supporting gear were appropriate for the environment. On filming days, I set up and operated multiple cameras, carefully framing each shot while monitoring both audio and visuals to maintain professional quality standards. Managing multi-camera setups required precision and attention to detail, particularly during interviews where continuity and composition were essential. I monitored audio levels throughout filming to ensure clarity and consistency, especially in environments where interruptions or background noise could affect recording quality. During interviews, I worked efficiently alongside the team, solving problems discreetly without interrupting the flow of conversation. As Lead Editor for Episode 2, I followed the production brief and implemented timecoded notes provided by the producer. However, I was fully responsible for technically executing those changes, structuring the edit accordingly, determining precise cut points, managing pacing between interviews and match footage, syncing media, balancing audio, and ensuring colour consistency across multiple cameras and archive footage. The final polish, rhythm, and technical cohesion of the episode were my responsibility. In addition to editing, I created thumbnail designs for all episodes and developed dynamic graphics used throughout the series. This required maintaining visual consistency while strengthening the overall branding and presentation of the project across digital platforms.
The production process required coordination across filming, technical setup, post-production, and graphic development, all within tight turnaround windows. During pre-production, equipment selection was deliberate and based on the demands of each shoot. Multi-camera interview setups were planned to ensure strong visual coverage, with framing designed to create a professional and consistent aesthetic across episodes. Audio capture was prioritised, particularly during sit-down interviews, as clarity and reliability were essential for a documentary-led format. Filming environments varied significantly. Interviews required controlled, composed framing and careful monitoring of sound and lighting. Matchday filming introduced unpredictability, including changing light conditions, crowd noise, and fast-paced action. Managing these variables required adaptability and strong situational awareness while maintaining broadcast-level standards. Throughout filming, I monitored audio levels and visual framing continuously to ensure technical consistency. Post-production was structured but creatively demanding. As Lead Editor on Episode 2, I followed the producer’s brief and implemented detailed timecoded revisions, ensuring the episode aligned precisely with the intended narrative direction. Within that structure, I was responsible for executing technical decisions including cut precision, pacing between interviews and match footage, audio balancing, syncing multi-camera content, colour consistency, and continuity across archive and newly filmed material. Organisation played a crucial role in the workflow. Managing newly captured footage alongside archive match material required disciplined file structuring and clear asset management to maintain efficiency under time pressure. Remote collaboration with the team meant communication needed to be clear, structured, and proactive to avoid delays. In addition to editorial work, I developed thumbnail designs for each episode and created dynamic graphics to support the series branding. These elements strengthened the digital presentation of the project and contributed to its consistency across online platforms. The combination of structured feedback, technical responsibility, and fast delivery timelines created a production environment that closely resembled real-world broadcast and sports documentary workflows, requiring professionalism, adaptability, and strong organisational discipline throughout.
For the production of A New Dawn at the Angels, we used a range of professional camera and audio equipment to capture high-quality visuals and sound. Cameras included the Sony A7III, Sony A7IV, and Nikon Z6, which provided flexibility for different shots and lighting conditions. For audio, we employed a RØDE wireless microphone system paired with headphones to monitor sound quality in real time. This setup allowed for a combination of wide coverage, close-ups, and dynamic shots while maintaining consistent image quality and clean, clear audio throughout all interviews, match footage, and behind-the-scenes segments. Careful planning of equipment and configuration was key to capturing the full scope of the project efficiently while ensuring professional results. For A New Dawn at the Angels, locations were carefully chosen to support the themes and narrative of each segment. I selected spaces that would visually communicate the story we wanted to tell, from the energy and dynamics of match days to the more personal, behind-the-scenes moments with players and staff. Consideration was given to lighting conditions, background elements, and camera mobility to ensure each location could be filmed efficiently while enhancing the emotional impact of the footage. By matching each location to the intended mood and theme, we were able to create visually compelling content that reinforced the project’s narrative, whether highlighting the intensity of training sessions or the camaraderie and character of the team off the pitch. This careful planning allowed for a cohesive visual style throughout the series while making the most of each environment.
One of the biggest challenges of this project was working within fast turnaround times while collaborating remotely as a team. Coordinating footage, archive match material, interviews, and newly filmed content required strong organisation and clear communication. Managing both old and new assets while ensuring everything remained coherent in the edit pushed me to become more structured and efficient in my workflow. Balancing creative ideas with producer feedback and production restrictions was another important learning experience. I had to adapt my creative instincts to align with the brief while still maintaining high technical standards. This improved my ability to take direction professionally while still owning my role within the production process. Working in a team environment where everyone clearly understood their responsibilities allowed the production to run smoothly and efficiently. I developed stronger non-verbal communication skills during filming, particularly in interviews where problems needed to be solved discreetly without disrupting the subject. This experience increased my confidence in high-pressure situations and strengthened my ability to collaborate effectively while maintaining professional composure. Overall, this project significantly improved my organisational skills, editorial discipline, and ability to operate within a structured production team, while still contributing creatively and technically to the final outcome.
The production team and club representatives responded positively to my contribution to the project, particularly my work as Lead Editor on Episode 2 and my involvement in filming and technical setup. Feedback highlighted the smooth pacing of the episode, the clarity of the interviews, and the overall professional finish of the edit. The thumbnails and dynamic graphics I created were also well received, helping to strengthen the visual consistency of the series across digital platforms. My ability to work efficiently within the brief while implementing detailed timecoded revisions was recognised as an important part of delivering the final episode on schedule.
Behind the scenes, the production required careful preparation and technical oversight. I selected and set up the required camera and audio equipment for each shoot, ensuring that multi-camera interview setups were framed consistently and recorded clearly. During filming, I monitored audio levels and visual framing in real time, adjusting discreetly when challenges arose so that interviews could continue uninterrupted. Matchday filming added another layer of complexity, as changing light, movement, and time constraints required quick adjustments while maintaining quality. The organisation of archive match footage alongside newly captured material also formed a key part of the workflow, ensuring that everything was accessible and ready for post-production. These behind-the-scenes processes were essential in maintaining a professional and efficient production environment.
